Dalida: Translated songs

Mourir sur scène (1983)

This is one of Dalida's sad songs since she is addressing Death itself, but at the same time, it has a very vague atmosphere especially with the music solos between the refrains. Death is personified in this song as a dancing partner, and we can see that when she says "Si tu veux danser avec moi .i.e. If you want to dance with me".

In the next lines, you will find the translated version of the song with notes for some lines which need more explanation in order to get the full value of the song.

Viens, mais ne viens pas quand je serai seule
Quand le rideau un jour tombera
Je veux qu'il tombe derrière moi
Come, but don't come when I am alone
When the curtain shall fall someday
I want it to fall behind me
Come, but don't come when I am alone
I, who have chosen everything in my life
I want to choose my death as well
There are those who wish to die on a rainy day
and others when the sun is full
There are those who wish to die alone in their bed
calmly during their sleep

Moi je veux mourir sur scène
Devant les projecteurs
Oui je veux mourir sur scène
Le cœur ouvert tout en couleurs
Mourir sans la moindre peine
Au dernier rendez-vous
Moi je veux mourir sur scène
En chantant jusqu'au bout

But I want to die on stage
in front of the projectors
yes I want to die on stage
with an open heart and colors all around
To die without the least need
of a last rendezvous
I want to die on stage
singing until the end

Viens, mais ne viens pas quand je serai seule
Tous les deux on se connaît déjà
On s'est vu de près souviens-toi
Come, but don't come when I am alone
the two of us already know each other
We almost met before, do you remember?
Come, but don't come when I am alone
choose rather a concert night
if you wish to dance with me
My life has burnt under a lot of lights
I can't escape to the shadow
I want to die shut by laser
in front of a full hall

Moi je veux mourir sur scène
Devant les projecteurs
Oui je veux mourir sur scène
Le cœur ouvert tout en couleurs
Mourir sans la moindre peine
Au dernier rendez-vous
Moi je veux mourir sur scène
En chantant jusqu'au bout

But I want to die on stage
in front of the projectors
yes I want to die on stage
with an open heart and colors all around
To die without the least need
of a last rendezvous
I want to die on stage
singing until the end

~ Musique ~

Mourir sans la moindre peine
D'une mort bien orchestrée
Moi, je veux mourir sur scène
C'est là que je suis née

~ Music ~

To die without the least need
of a well orchestrated death
I want to die on stage
It's there where I was born

Notes:

Come, but don't come when I am alone, the two of us know each other, we almost met before, do you remember?

These lines indicate when Dalida tried to commit suicide for the first time in 1965 when her lover "Luigi Tenco" passed away. Her family was able to take her to the hospital at the last moment and she finally survived. She almost met death.

The song was later sung in English by Dalida herself, and later after by Percy Shelly under the title of "Born to sing"
